Todd Finishes 3rd in AJGA Tourney in Greensboro

GREENSBORO – Brendon Todd of Cary and Webb Simpson of Raleigh posted top 10 finishes in the American Junior Golf Association’s Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic June 11-14 at The Cardinal Country Club.

Todd, who will be a high school junior this fall, shot 74-72-70 to improve his standing every day and ended up in third place, four shots off the pace of Roberto Castro of Alpharetta, Ga. Castro finished at two-over-par 212 on the 6,568-yard Cardinal course.

Brad Tilley of Chapaqua, N.Y. was second at 215, three shots off the winning pace.

Simpson, who will be a high school sophomore, tied for 10th at 220 (75-70-75).

The event featured 102 boys and girls representing 18 states, Washington, D.C. and Canada. Included in that total were 36 North Carolina natives.

Nicholas Baker, who will be a senior at McMichael High School in Madison, tied for 12th place. He opened with a 77 but came back with a pair of 72s to move up the leaderboard.

Rodney Thomas of Lexington, who will play at N.C. State this fall, grabbed the first round lead with a 69 but he slipped to 79 in round two and then posted a final-round 75. He settled for a tie for 17th.

Mark Wilson of Burlington also cracked the top 25, shooting 77-74-76 – 226. He tied for 24th.

Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va. claimed the championship of the girls division with a 224 total.

Playing the 5,661-yard course, Beers shot 76-72-76 to finish one shot ahead of Kelly Froelich of Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Chris Brady of Apex was the top Triangle/Triad finisher with a 243 total. The rising high school junior shot 78-86-79 for 13th place.

Maggie Simons of Raleigh was 14th at 245 (89-79-77).

Greensboro’s Sofia Niklasson was 20th at 255 (81-86-88).
