Summer Youth Golf Programs Galore

Just because school is out doesn’t mean that kids have to stop learning. Summer is a great time to replace readin’, writin’ and ’rithmetic’ with golfing skills. Our area has numerous clinics, camps and programs for juniors. Get your child away from the tube and on to the course. You will both feel better for it.
TRIAD AREA
Indian Valley G. C. in Burlington will have a Nike Golf School June 11 to 15. It is designed for ages 7 through 13 and will be held from 8 am until noon. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The cost is $135.
Also, each Wednesday morning, from 8 am until noon, one-hour clinics will be held at the course. Groups of 12 will receive instruction in various points of the game for $2.

The Ken Venturi Golf Academy at Grandover Resort in Greensboro will have a special three-day junior golf school June 25 through 27. It is modeled after the program for adults with all aspects of the game to be covered, including video analysis and an on-course playing lesson. The program will be from 8:30 am to 3 pm and is designed for boys and girls 13 to 18. Cost is $599. Lunch will be provided. Tony Piparo’s Total Performance Golf Junior Summer Camps will be at Cedar Pointe in Winston-Salem. Each camp lasts three hours per day for four consecutive days and will include work on the fundamentals of grip, stance, posture and alignment. All skills will be addressed including full swing, putting, chipping, pitching, sand play and course management. Each golfer’s swing will be videotaped.
Cost of the camp is $125 per student. Cost includes all range balls and learning materials. Camps are divided into two groups: pre-teens (ages 6-11) June 26–29, July 16-19, July 30-Aug. 2; teens (ages 12-17) July 9-12, July 23-26, Aug. 6-9. Time 1-4 pm.
On Fridays at 5 pm there will be free junior lessons with the purchase of a bucket of balls.

Silo Run in Boonville will conduct five weeks of junior camps. Sessions will be Mondays through Thursdays June 18-21 and 25-28, July 9-12, 16-19 and 23-26. The camps are designed for young golfers from 5 to 17. Beginning each day at 10 am, the golfers will spend time on the driving range, have lunch and discuss rules and etiquette, and then play games – chipping, putting, etc. Thursdays will be devoted to tournaments based on age. Cost is $85 for members and $115 for non-members.

Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem has scheduled a series of coed junior clinics. These four-day programs are designed for golfers 7-14 and will be held May 28-31, June 11-14 and 25-28, and July 16-19. Cost is $145 which includes lunch and a goody bag. Clinic times are 9 am until noon. A tournament on July 20 will climax the summer program. "Pre-registration is a good idea," said L.C. Styers. Tanglewood Park in Clemmons will hold numerous junior clinics for various skill levels throughout the summer.
Basic junior clinics for all ages will be held May 28–June 1, June 4-9, 11-15 and 18-22, July 9-13 and 23-27. Clinics will be from 10 am until 2 pm. Cost is $200 per student per session and includes lunch.
A special session for pee-wee golfers ages 5–8 will be held July 16-18 from 10 am-11:30 am. Cost is $85 per student.
Advanced junior golf clinics will be held June 25-29 and July 30-Aug.3. They will run from 10 am until 5 pm at a cost of $275 per student per session (includes lunch).
A junior golf package including both beginner and advanced clinics is available for $425 per student including lunch.

The Winston Lake Junior Golf Association program is one of the oldest and most respected junior golf programs in the Triad. Membership entitles the young golfer a variety of instructional days, play days and tournament opportunities. Classes are designed for the beginner, intermediate and advanced player and not only deal with the basics of the game, but also the rules, golf etiquette and how to dress on the course. The program begins June 4 and concludes with an awards picnic on July 26. Activities are scheduled three days a week and will be under the watchful eye of head professional Earnest Morris. The National Black Golf Hall of Fame will hold its Junior Golf Camp at Civitan Park in Winston-Salem. This free instructional camp is being held for the tenth consecutive year. Co-sponsored by the Winston-Salem Housing Authority, it has served more than 1,500 kids through the years. The summer camp will be held Mondays through Fridays 9:30 until 11:30 am beginning in June and continuing until school starts in August. A fall program will begin after school opens and continue until the weather gets too cold. It will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 pm. Stoney Creek Golf Club will be offering one-day clinics each Tuesday from 9 to 10 am. The clinics will begin June 12 and run through the summer. Juniors can attend one or all of the sessions designed for ages 6-16. Each session will cost $5 for members and $10 for non-members. PGA golf professional Rick Worsham at the Armory Golf Center in Winston-Salem invites juniors to free lesson nights. Boys can come on Wednesdays and girls on Tuesdays, 7-9 pm. Call for details: 336-724-5456.
Gillespie Golf Course in Greensboro will have a coed golf camp for ages 7-16. The four-day session will be June 11-14 from 9:30 am-12:30 pm at a cost of $40. Enrollment will be limited. Call Bob Brooks or Billy Eastwood at 336-373-5850.
Oak Valley in Advance will be sponsor a coed junior clinic on June 11-12. Cost is $70, which includes lunch. Call David Watts at 336-940-2000 to register.
Oak Valley will also be the site of two golf camps sponsored by the Davie County Family YMCA. The first week will be from July 16-19, followed by a second, July 23-26. The coed camp is designed for ages 8-16 and will be held from 8-11 am. Cost is $95 for YMCA members and $105 for others, lunch is included. Golf fundamentals will be taught by the Oak Valley staff. Jamestown Park in Jamestown has an ongoing junior program beginning in late June on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for an hour to an hour and a half. The Charles Turner Memorial Tournament is scheduled for July 10.
Rick Murphy of Carolina Golf Academy is coordinating summer junior programs for three venues – Carolina Golf Academy, Bur-Mil Park and Bryan Park. All locations are in the Greensboro area.
The season will begin with a free "Club for Kids Day" clinic to be held June 9 for golfers 17 and under at Carolina Golf and Practice Facility.
At that location, three camps are scheduled. One full day camp will be held June 11-15 from 9 am to 5 pm. Cost is $295 which includes lunch. Two half-day programs will be held on June 25-29 and July 23-27. The $195 fee includes lunch.
Carolina Golf Academy has a clinics being held each Saturday from 10:30 am until noon and from 2-3:30 pm. Beginning the week of June 18 there will be clinics each Tuesday and Thursday from 9-10:30 am. Each of the one and a half hour clinics is $15.

Bur-Mil Park will be the site of a half-day camp July 9-13 from 9 am to 1 pm. The $195 fee includes lunch.
Every Saturday there are on-going clinics from 10:30 am until noon and 2-3:30 pm. Beginning the week of June 18 there will be clinics on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-10:30 am. Clinic costs are $15 per session.

The practice facility at Bryan Park will be the location of a half-day camp July 23-27 from 9 am-1 pm. Lunch is included in the $195 fee.
Hour and a half clinics will be held at the practice facility every Saturday from 10:30 until noon. Beginning the week of June 18 the clinics will also be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11:30. Cost is $15 per clinic.

Long Creek and R.A.’s Driving Range in Bethania will have a basic junior golf camp June 18-21. Instruction will begin at 8:30 am. Two days will be spent on the driving range, with nine-hole course rounds each day. While designed for beginners, all skill levels are invited to participate. Two Summer Junior Golf Camps will be held at the Triad Golf Center in Greensboro. Session #1 will be June 11-15 followed by session #2 from July 30-Aug. 3. Each session will offer full-day programs as well as half-day sessions. Full day ($285) will be from 9 am to 4 pm, with half day ($160) from 9 am to 12:30 pm. All programs are coed.
Camp staff will include Robert Linville, golf coach at Greensboro College and 1993 Carolinas PGA Teacher of the Year; Chris Haarlow, lead instructor of Precision Golf School and a three-time All-American at Guilford College and David Horne, recent graduate of Greensboro College where he received All-America honors.
For those who wish to play in tournaments and would like to gain some insights into competitive golf, there will be a three-day coed camp for advanced players from 14-18. Dates to be announced. Classes will be limited to 5 or 6 golfers and will be from 9 am to 4 pm. Cost is $300 and will include 36 holes on regulation courses, video analysis, intensive instruction, pre-shot routine, practice techniques and all lunches.

Holly Ridge Golf Links in Archdale will have a series of junior camps on Wednesdays: June 13, 20 and 27 and July 11, 18 and 25. The programs are coed and designed for ages 7-18.
Beginners will meet from 8:30-10 am. Instruction includes golf basics, games, and on-course experience. Intermediate/Advanced golfers will meet 10:15-11:45 am. Those sessions include golf basics review, course management, rules and competitive play, skills contests and on-course instruction. This program is great preparation for tournaments or high school competition.
Price for either camp is $75 which includes range balls, green fee for on-course lesson and a goodie bag. An individual can sign up for single sessions for $15 each.

Hemlock Golf Club in Walnut Cove is scheduling a junior clinic. Four-day classes (M-W-F and M) will begin on July 23. Golfers from ages 6-17 will be arranged by skill level for driving range and on-course instruction. Cost $50. Call Tommy Ziglar to register and more information, 336-591-7934.
Oak Hollow in High Point will have two junior clinics: the first, June 18-19 and the second July 16-17. They will run from 9 am until noon at a cost of $20 for each.
Four junior play days will be held alternating between Oak Hollow and Blair Park, June 25 (Oak Hollow), July 9 (Blair Park) and July 23 (O.H.) and July 30 (B.P.). Cost is $5 for each play day. Pine Knolls Golf Club in Kernersville is the site for junior programs at three different skill levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced.
The beginners program will be held Monday mornings, June 11, 18 and 25 and July 9, 16 and 23, from 8-10 am. Cost is $95. Golfer must be at least eight years old. The intermediate program will be on the same dates from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. Cost is $125.
The advanced program will be held Monday afternoons, June 11, 18 and 25 and July 9, 16 and 23 from 1-2:30 or 3 pm. On-course play after instruction. Cost is $195.
The cost for each program includes instruction, lunch or snacks, range balls, gifts and prizes.

TRIANGLE AREA
Duke University Golf Club will host a series of four junior schools in June. Programs for all skill levels, June 3-8; advanced skill levels, June 10-15; all skill levels, June 17-22 and June 24-29. Registration is on Sundays, 2 pm-5 pm and instruction is Monday-Friday from 8-11 am. Weekly sessions cost $275 with a reduced fee—$400—for two sessions. All golfers can participate in the Final Play Days, July 30-Aug. 3. Play days include a variety of contests and the junior club championship. A parent-child tournament will be held on July 26. Instructors will include Ed Ibarguen and his staff from the golf club and Duke University golf coaches Rod Myers and Dan Brooks. For information, call 919-681-2288.
SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA AREA
Jim Arnold of Green’s Folly indicated that there would be two coed resident camps at his South Boston, Va., course. The first session will be June 24-28 followed by a second session July 22-26. The program is designed for junior golfers from 7-17. The $490 fee includes room (at a local Best Western) and board. Arnold’s camp often attracts high school golf teams and their coaches from as far away as Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Instruction will be by Arnold, his assistant David Graham—who has had experience on mini-tours—and college women’s golf coaches Chris
Dockrill, of Elon and Steve Lott of Western Carolina.
Ringgold Golf Club near Danville, Va., will be the site of the Ringgold Youth Golf League in June and July. Younger or inexperienced golfers will play nine holes starting at 8 am and experience golfers will play nine holes starting at 9 am with an option to play an additional nine. Play dates include June 12, June 19, June 26, July 3, July 11 and July 17. There is a $15 registration fee. PINEHURST AREA
Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst will be the site of three coed resident camps that are part of the Nike Junior Camp experience. Sessions are scheduled for June 17-22 and Aug. 5-10, with an advanced player school on tap July 15-20. Cost for each is $995 which includes room, board and golf fees. The camps can also be attended on an extended day basis (8 am-9 pm) for $895. Camp director is Tom Ream, PGA professional and director of the Pinewild Golf Academy.

COLLEGE RELATED PROGRAMS
Many young golfers who aspire to play more seriously after their high school years try to attend one of the many college and university camps and clinics. Not only do these programs offer excellent instruction and playing possibilities, but it gives the golfer an opportunity to meet coaches from a variety of colleges.
Wake Forest University’s women’s golf coach Diane Dailey is beginning a junior girls golf day camp on the Wake campus. One session is scheduled from June 11-15 from 9 am to 3 pm. This program is designed for girls 10-18. The $395 fee includes lunch and a round of golf at
Tanglewood, daily reports and a video. To register call 336-758-5751.
The Tarheel Golf School in Chapel Hill is directed by UNC head golf coach John Inman. Three sessions are scheduled: June 10-14, June 16-20 and July 14-18. The $950 cost covers room and board, instruction, green fees and goodies. Play will be on the newly redesigned Tom Fazio Finley course. Touring pros are expected to "drop in." Regular instructors include PGA "class A" professionals and college golf coaches. For application and information call 919-402-1034.
The Jerry Haas Golf Camp at Wake Forest University offers three one-week sessions. As we go to press, there is only space available for the third session. Sessions are held June 16-22, June 23-29 and June 30-July 6. Cost is $1,100 per session, which includes room and board on campus. Participants in this program use The Haddock Center, a premier golf instruction facility featuring a 326-yard driving range, five target greens, practice bunkers and a putting green. Jerry Haas, head coach and Jesse Haddock, golf coach emeritus head the camp staff. Former Wake Forest players and tour professionals are expected to attend. UNC-G will hold a coed golf camp on the university facilities in Greensboro. It is already full. It is not too early to be thinking about 2002. Call coach Ellen Lapierre at 336-334-5316.
The Wolfpack Golf School in Raleigh will use the facilities of Wildwood Green Golf Club. Three coed, day-camp-only, sessions are being offered. The first, a "starter" school for ages 6-11 will be held June 11-14, 9 am-1 pm, and will cost $240. The second, for ages 12-18, will be held June 18-21, 9 am-4 pm, and will cost $390. The third, for ages 6-18, will be July 9-12, 9 am-noon, and will cost $205. Lunch will be provided for the first two camps but not for the last camp session.

Duke Academy of Golf will hold two one-week resident sessions, July 14-19 and 21-26. The academy director is Dan Brooks, women’s golf coach and assistant men’s golf coach at Duke. Each session is coed with the age range 11-17. High school graduates are not eligible. Tuition for the academy is $1125, which includes food and lodging on the Duke campus.
