Youth Clinics, Camps Abound in Spring and Summer

Compiled By ED DUPREE and LARRY JONES

When advancements in golf are talked up, most of the conversations are geared toward technology. Sure, clubs are better and balls fly longer and straighter, but an advancement that rarely receives publicity might ultimately be the most important — the increased availability of instruction.

Chances are if there's something in your game that's ailing you, help is as near as your closest golf course or driving range. That goes for beginners and single-digit handicappers, kids and seniors, regardless of gender.

Options abound indeed. If you're interested in a clinic, you can choose any number of the offerings from the partial list that's included below, or you can chat up you local head professional for what he or she may offer. If it's a golf school you're after, there again are plenty to choose from. The same goes for individual instruction.

"Teaching golf has never been more popular," says veteran teacher Ronnie Reitz, a fixture in the Triangle for more than 35 years who's back sharing his wisdom at Wake Forest Country Club. "It's what I love to do, and I think it's what I'm best at."

The 61-year-old Reitz is providing the same options as many course and driving ranges. He'll teach you privately or within a group setting, regardless of age or skill.

"I want people to know that I'm back," says Reitz, whose longest stint at any one club was as the head pro at Raleigh's North Ridge Country Club from 1971-83. "I've gotten a lot of calls, and that has me excited. There's nothing like teaching golf, and I'm looking forward to giving back something to a game that's been so good for me."

Reitz came to the Triangle from Pennsylvania in 1961 as an assistant pro at Carolina Country Club. Numerous stops ensued, and he even played the PGA Tour in 1970-71. After 12 years at North Ridge, he bought an ownership stake in Wake Forest Country Club. The former Carolinas PGA Teacher of the Year maintains that interest to this day, and has since served in a variety of head pro and teaching positions, including several recent years at River Ridge.

"It's been a fun journey," says Reitz. "I've met a lot of great people and taught a lot of golf. And I'm still doing both."

And going strong. "I'm working on a schedule for a junior camp and some other things," he says. "Last week I did a ladies clinic, and I'd like to do some couples clinics." For more information, call Reitz at 919-696-8063 or 919-556-5290.
