2005 Recap

Triad Golf Today Tournament of Champions

April 2-3 2005 Greensboro National Golf Club (par 72)

SUMMMERFIELD -- Andrew Smith of High Point birdied the third playoff hole and won the 9th annual Triad Golf Today Tournament of Champions Sunday, April 3, at Greensboro National.

Smith opened with a 73 Saturday and followed with another 73, tying Sunday’s low round which was played in extremely windy conditions. His second round was highlighted by a birdie-birdie-eagle start on the back nine.

Smith tied first-round co-leader Mike Goodes of Reidsville, who shot 70-76. Goodes, the reigning CGA Mid-Amateur champion, forced the playoff by sinking a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.

After the first two playoff holes were tied with pars, Smith ended it at No. 3, a 579-yard par-5. Smith’s third shot from just off the edge of the green stopped 12 feet short, but he drained the putt for a birdie. Goodes, just off the green in two, putted to within six feet but his birdie bid lipped out, allowing Smith to claim the title.

The tournament, with a field of 41, was exclusive to players who won tournaments in 2004. Smith qualified by winning the Challenge Invitational in Graham last summer.

For much more on the tournament and details on the Interclub divisions, watch for our May issue which will be in all of our locations the last week in April.
