Defending champion Christo Greyling finished the 6th Annual Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational seven strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Greyling never was challenged as he worked his way to 7-under-par over 36 holes to finish with 135. The national event was conducted Sept. 16-17, on the par-71, 6,270 yard Country Club of Spartanburg.

Greyling of Orlando started the final round with a three-stroke lead. His biggest challenge came from the swirling winds and testy hole locations. For the second day the wind blew from the north. Locals say the course plays 2-4 strokes harder with a northerly wind. That might explain why the strong field could only muster six sub-par rounds this year.

The Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational extended invitations to the top finishers from a select list of events held over the last 12 months. The 2000 list of players represents 13 states and 59 titles. (12 state champions, four AJGA titles). Finishing alone in second place was Patrick Phillips of Athens, Ga. He posted a pair of 71s and finished at even-par 142.

The tournament was held in honor of the late Robert H. Chapman Jr. Chapman, a longtime member of the Country Club of Spartanburg. Mr. Chapman was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Association. He was an accomplished player and served the USGA in several capacities. In his business life, Chapman was a local and national leader in the textile industry.

The Bobby Chapman Invitational is included in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association North Carolina Junior Rankings.

The 2000-2001 edition of the PING American College Golf Guide is now available for purchase. Since 1989, Dean Frischknecht of Hillsboro, Ore., has published a book which now stands as the "must have" book for perspective college golfers.

The guide has NCAA rules for athletes and coaches alike, tips on résumé writing, results of many college events during the previous year and a listing of every known college and university in the United States with a golf team—currently over 1,000 institutions.

"A friend of mine, a top NCAA Division I golf coach, remarked to me that he had dozens of letters from players who were not good enough for his team," Frischknecht explained, "I realized many players didn’t know what was available to them."

His wisdom and diligence have led to the book that UNLV Men’s Golf Coach Dwaine Knight says "will help you research your options and prioritize your choices."

The guide is available for $13.95 + $2 shipping by calling 503-648-1333, by writing Frischknecht at PO Box 1179, Hillsboro, Oregon, or, orders can be placed through the PING College Guide Website at www.collegegolf.com.

The 2001 CGA, USGA and TYGA schedules are taking shape. The tentative schedule (more dates will be added):

June 4 TYGA at Cedarbrook Country Club, Elkin

June 18 North Carolina Junior Championship Qualifier, Piney Point Golf Club, Norwood

June 19-22 North Carolina Junior Championship, Old North State Club, New London

June 25 USGA Junior Qualifier, Forsyth Country Club, Winston-Salem

July 12 TYGA Par Three Shootout, Pinewild Country Club (Azalea Course), Pinehurst

July 31-Aug. 2 Carolinas Junior Championship, Greensboro Country Club, Greensboro

Events that will be added to the calendar include a USGA Junior qualifier, the TYGA Four-Ball, the TYGA Year-End Match Play and at least two other TYGA One-Day tournaments. A new tournament, added to the TYGA schedule for 2001, is the TYGA Par-Three Shootout. The format, while still in the planning stages, will most likely be 60-80 players touring the Azalea course at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst for 18 holes. The stroke play will be followed by the low player in each age division plus the lowest five other players (for a total of 10) playing in a nine-hole elimination shootout to determine the champion.
